Amazing Falcon 9 booster landing on “Of Course I Still Love You”.
Fun fact about landing a SpaceX booster:
Balancing the booster is comparable to balancing a broom handle or pen on your fingertips. Each booster accomplishes this balancing trick by having nine engines, each of which can be aimed. Watching the landing video closely, it is possible to see the center engine changing its direction. The longer the object, the easier it is to balance it. Try it with a pen and then with a broom handle. The pen is way more difficult to balance then the broom handle. The longer object has a greater moment of inertia. This means that its rate of angular acceleration will be less for the same turning force. This gives you more time to make adjustments to maintain the state of balance.
In the broom handle analogy, changing the orientation of the engine corresponds to moving your hand to keep the broom handle upright. In both cases it is possible to measure the orientation of the rocket/broom, decide how to fire the engine or move your hand, and then implement those decisions.
